Medical Malpractice- Failure to Monitor IV Site
Date: January, 2025
Plaintiff’s Attorney: Ronald E. Gluck – Boston, Massachusetts
Case Description
At the time of the incident, the six-month-old child was brought to the hospital by her mother for IV therapy due to bronchiolitis. Over a 16-hour period, the nursing staff failed to monitor the IV site on her arm although the standard of care called for hourly monitoring of the site. When the site was finally unwrapped and inspected for the first time, after 16 hours, it was clear that the child had suffered an IV infiltration leading to concern for compartment syndrome necessitating emergency surgery involving multiple incisions on various parts of her arm. As a result of the surgery, she is left with significant surgical scarring on her arm. Although efforts have been and will be made to minimize the scarring, she will be left with several keloid scars on her arm. Fortunately, the function of her arm is good. The child, who is now four years old, was evaluated by a child psychologist and plastic surgeon to establish a reasonable prognosis for the psychological effects that she will likely experience because of the scarring as she matures. A portion of the settlement compensation will be used to fund activities and programming that will help her become a confident person as she grows into adulthood.
